By Chris HoggettThe CBC’s Chris Haggis speaks to the CEO of an American company that’s working on a project that would see the government install a giant green roof over a city in a project dubbed “The City That Will Not Shut Up”.
It’s called “the City That You Never See”.
“The idea that the city will shut up is something that’s been a cornerstone of our work,” said Peter Folsom, chief executive officer of Green Roof, which is building a roof in the city of Detroit.
“It’s something that we’ve always done in Detroit and it’s something we’re looking to do in Detroit again.”
The plan is to install a new structure over the Detroit Institute of Arts to be built around the Detroit Public Library, complete with a new roof.
“I think we’re at the point now where we can have a conversation about the city that we never see, and what we want to do,” said Folsam.
“The City You Never Look is really an attempt to be a catalyst for what I call the new generation, the next generation that’s going to create a better future for this city and the world.”
Folsom says he’s in talks with the city about the roof, but says he wants to get it approved first.
“We’re in talks,” he said.
“We’ve got a process going now, and hopefully we’ll be able to get this done before the winter months.”
The new roof, which Folsams team says will be about 100 feet high, is designed to provide shade for the building and a place to store all the equipment.
Folsams plans to have the new structure up and running by next summer.
He said the roof will cost about $1.4 million, and the project is being funded with $400,000 from the U.S. government.
Follsom said the project will also create a new green space for Detroit residents to park.
“People who live in Detroit are going to be able park in Detroit,” he explained.
“This is going to make Detroit a better place for everybody.”
The project is expected to cost $400 million and take about five years to complete.
The new roof is expected be ready for the start of the next fiscal year in 2020.
The city’s budget for fiscal year 2020 is $1 billion.
